Cadillac Golf Tournament A Success

(July 19) -- The 1997 golf outing in Cadillac, MI was a great time. We had 17 attendees (counting spouses and friends).

The weekend began with golf on Thursday for the early arrivals, including Tom Sherwood who could not resist "scouting" the tournament site.

On Friday, nine of us played two nine-hole courses, Caberfae Peaks in the morning and Lakewood On The Green in the afternoon. The only downside of the day was that Bondy lost all of his golf balls on the first nine and had to restock before loosing a few dozen more in the afternoon round.

The Neffs hosted an open house on Friday evening, attended by 15. The group took on the task of sampling Jim's home brews and consumed about two-and-a-half cases, along with other liquids.

Saturday was the main event. Four teams took to the links at The Rose, just south of Cadillac. Later that night, the group met for dinner at Maggie's Tavern. Finally, nightcaps were consumed at La Senorita's, where Dan "OB" or "Aw-bee" (or whatever is today's pronounciation of Aube's last name), regaled us with the story of "The Catch" (see the homecoming game page) and various exploits which revolved around Dan eliminating water from his bladder.

In all, we had a wonderful time and laughed a lot. Every participant received a bag of tees (with "St. Mike's Class of '65, Cadillac Golf Tour '97" written on them) and two Cadillac logo golf balls. The winning team each got a Rose cap. And in the closest to the pin contest, Ric Bondy and Myrna Lamb each won a custom-made putter.

Watch this website for details about next year's golf event.

The winning team was 5 under par. Alex Gundry (a ringer), Judy Fox/Aube (the only "honest" one in the group), Myrna Lamb (another ringer), Tom Sherwood (who scouted the course in advance).

Second place went to a "St. Luke's" threesome at 4 under par. Jon Newbill, Louie Passeriello, and Colleen Beattie/Gundry.

Third place was taken by this group at 3 over par. Tom Gartland, Jim Neff, Dan Aube.

Finishing fourth with a 5-over score was this team. Gary Bates, Ric Bondy, Ann Militello/Neff, Nancy Lawrence.

Showing the form that led them to a last place finish, Bates and Bondy seemingly point to where they want their drives to land. Actually they are signalling the beverage cart for two more brews.

Nancy also shows that form is everything, even if you only play golf once a year. While her follow-through is picture perfect, if you look closely you'll see that she has failed to propel the ball off the tee.

Jon Newbill relaxes after a day at the Rose.

Gartland, Sherwood, and Bates also rest their weary bones.
